Recently I was performing a home inspection in Greensboro for a young couple. They were having their first child and buying a new home. As you can imagine, their biggest concern was for the safety of their child. They had numerous questions, which I was more than happy to answer. I even had this nifty pamphlet on childproofing your home for the studious couple. I decided the information would be good info to post on my blog and here it is listed below.

Childproofing Your Home: 10 Safety Devices to Protect Your Children

2.5 million children are injured or killed by hazards in the home each year. Most of these incidents can be prevented by using child-safety devices that are available. Safety devices should be sturdy enough to prevent injury to your child, but easy enough for you to use. Remember, also, that no device is completely childproof. A child with determination can still bypass most safety devices.

1.  Safety Latches for drawers and cabinets to prevent the child from accessing chemicals or sharp objects.

2.  Safety Gates to prevent falls down stairs and to limit access to unsafe areas.

3.  Door Knob Covers to prevent access to rooms that could pose a safety hazard.

4.  Anti Scald Devices: Water temperatures above 130 degrees can scald a child in seconds.

5.  Smoke Detectors should be installed on every level and inside each room.

6.  Window Guards at elevated windows to prevent falls out the window.

7.  Corner bumpers on the edges of sharp objects to prevent injuries from a fall.

8.  Outlet covers to prevent electrical shock or electrocution.

9.  Carbon Monoxide Detectors outside of bedrooms.

10. Cut blind chords to prevent children from being strangled by the chord.

In summary, there are a number of different safety devices that can be purchased to ensure the safety of children in the home. With a few modifications to your home, most injuries that occur in the home can be prevented. If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call.
